Sutsung
Waste and by-products such as bio-waste, food-waste, and agro-waste have multiple applications to improve social, economic, and environmental outcomes. Satsung produces sustainable alternatives to conventional animal feed and is venturing into biodegradable, compostable bioplastics, using by-products of agricultural products.
The livestock industry in India grapples with the challenge of sourcing sustainable and nutritious alternatives to commonly used soy and fish meal feed. These conventional animal feed options incur a high cost for smallholder farmers, comprising 60-80% of total farming expenses. The use of insects, such as black soldier fly meal (BSFM), provides nutritious, cost-effective and immunomodulatory effects, as well as offers a sustainable and regenerative alternative. Sutsung focuses on producing sustainable animal feed utilizing BSFM derived from food waste.
As the cassava crop shifted from sustenance to industry farming in the last century, numerous applications of extracted starch in industries such as adhesives, paper, and corrugation gained popularity. Expanding on this potential, Satsung intends to produce biodegradable, compostable bioplastics from cassava starch. India consumes approximately 21 million tons of plastic annually produced from petroleum-based products. Replacing plastic with bioplastics avoids the harmful after-effects of plastic on the environment.
Through its business model, Sutsung aims to improve the lives of smallholder farmers as both customers and suppliers and reduce environmental damage by minimizing waste. In addition, S3IDF’s pre-seed investment in Satsung will enable a compounding reduction of GHG emissions, sustainable job creation, and mitigation of environmental damages.
